APBOT helps Ajax public school help Africycle effort
If you've been reading your weekly Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade e-Bulletin, you know that to kick off Earth Week, the Board's Environment Task Force partnered with Africycle and the Eco School Team at Lincoln Avenue Public School to collect used and new bicycles to provide sustainable transportation in Africa.
Africycle is a charitable organization based out of Uxbridge that works to keep bikes out of our landfills and get them in the hands of people in great need in Malawi, in southern Africa. Lincoln Avenue PS, is a Durham District School Board school, and the DDSB is a member of the Board of Trade, so it was a natural fit to assist the cause.
Don Terry, of OPG and a member of the Board's Environment Task Force, helped the Eco-School Team collect the bikes and cash donations to help with the expense of shipping bikes. Final numbers are still to be determined, but it was estimated about 130 bikes were donated at the event.
Also attending to lend support from the Environment Task Force were Andrew Ross and Dave Stell.
Ben Voss, left, the executive director for Africycle, drove the bus to Ajax to collect donations from Don Terry, representing OPG, the Lincoln Avenue PS parent council and the Board of Trade's Environment Task Force, with his daughter Hannah, a member of the school's Eco School Team.
