Chief Ewles Joins Board Members at Breakfast

On Thursday, Durham Regional Police Chief Mike Ewles visited the Board of Trade and enjoyed breakfast at the Ajax Convention Centre. It was the fourth time the Board hosted an event in co-operation with DRPS, and the second address by the Chief.

Chief Ewles provided an update on the progress and challenges that Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has faced since meeting with the Board a year ago. The Chief outlined some key statistics for Durham Region noting that 620,000 residents in eight municipalities present interesting challenges with 130,000 calls for assistance annually and 31,000 reported crimes leading to 9,000 cases in the court system.

Chief Ewles presented some interesting statistics on crime in Durham Region.

He proudly noted that DRPS has been recognized nationally and internationally for its quality of investigative skill and caliber of law enforcement.

Chief Ewles emphasized that crime prevention is equal in importance to law enforcement and needs a collaborative relationship with business and the community. An example of crime prevention is through environment design with attention to improved lighting, signage placement as well as other factors. Making sure that security cameras and videos are in proper working order is important as well.  A safety audit is available to those who are interested. The police website at www.drps.ca contains further information.

With increasing pressure on the current judicial system alternatives need to be found such as restorative justice for the 18-24 age group. Overall crime is down while crimes of opportunity, credit card fraud and skimming are up.

Chief Ewles is excited about where DRPS is going and is pleased that he will continue in his current role for another five years. Eight new officers have been added to the force this year and there is a dedicated property crime unit. A question and answer period followed his remarks.
