2009 Business Excellence and Business Person
of the Year Awards recipients announced
AJAX/PICKERING, October 15, 2009 – The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade is proud to acknowledge three local businesses and one individual for their professional achievements at the 15th annual Business Excellence and Business Person of the Year Awards gala, held Oct. 15, at Deer Creek Golf Clubs in Ajax.
Wayne Hoth, owner of Pickering Audio Visual, receives the award for the 1-9 Employees category of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade Business Excellence Awards from Harry Yetman, of First Durham Insurance.

Smith, president of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade. “We are proud to pay tribute to the companies, organizations and individuals in Ajax and Pickering who demonstrate excellence in business performance, leadership and community involvement.”

The recipients are:
1-9 CATEGORY: Pickering Audio Visual
Started in 1979, Pickering Audio Visual Inc. has been providing audio and visual communications equipment and services to many of the best establishments in Durham Region and Toronto for 30 years. They are highly regarded for their professional installations and this is due to Wayne Hoth, owner and President of Pickering AV, who has more than 40 years experience in communications and systems.
10-49 CATEGORY: Scientists in School
Scientists in School is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to motivating interest in science and technology. Their team of over 300 enthusiastic scientists and technical experts bring a wide variety of hands-on workshops to the classroom that are aligned with the Ontario Elementary Science and Technology Curriculum.

50+ CATEGORY: Tribute Communities
Tribute Communities is a homebuilder with more than 20 years experience in dozens of fine communities and more than 25,000 homes built across the Greater Metropolitan Area. Tribute Communities was founded by President Al Libfeld and CEO Howard Sokolowski who continue to be actively involved in the company’s day-to-day operations.
BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR: Kirsten Schmidt-Chamberlain, Durham Hospice
Kirsten Schmidt-Chamberlain recently accepted a new position with the Local Health Integration Network as Hospice Palliative Care Network Coordinator. Her skills as Executive Director of Durham Hospice were a great attraction to her new employer. At Durham Hospice, Kirsten was known for her open-door leadership. Kirsten explains that she looks to learn as much as teach and celebrates opportunities to promote change and growth from everyone. She involves her team as much as possible and celebrates their accomplishments.
The Awards were established in 1994 to recognize the achievements and excellence in business performance, while the Business Person category was added in 2004. An independent panel of judges evaluates the nominees based on three categories – one to nine, 10 to 49 and 50+ employees. All nominees are selected by their business peers.
Cynthia Mearns accepts the Rotary Club of Pickering's Community Leadership Award from Rotary representative Afsar Naqvi.

The Rotary Club of Pickering awarded its Community Leadership award during the Board of Trade event. Afsar Naqvi surprised Cynthia Mearns, who is the retired CEO of the Pickering Library, when he announced she was the recipient. Her work at the library has helped many people and staff there managed to bring her to the event without her knowing about the award, she explained in her acceptance speech.
